A tall black cat in white gloves and a red and white striped top hat is pulling up to your house in a small sports car, what should you do? A Lorax is going door to door in your neighborhood collecting signatures on a petition to save the trees. You know an elephant named Horton and that a boy named Sam-I-Am has a friend who does not eat green eggs and ham in a dish or with a fish, here or there or anywhere! Everyone knows about Grinches and Whos and Things 1 and 2 … And we know these odd and seemingly disconnected things because of a magical man by the name of Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss!
Next Saturday, March 2, is his birthday and children all over the United States will celebrate Read Across America week with book parties and character parades, guest readers and special art projects, and lots of Dr. Seuss books. Theodore Geisel grew up in Springfield, MA where he lived with his parents and sister, Marne. His mother would chant rhymes from her childhood to Ted and Marne at bedtime and Dr. Seuss said he learned to rhyme from his mother. Today, the hometown hero is honored with a garden at the Springfield Library and Museum that displays bronze sculptures of some of the most famous characters from his books: The Grinch, Thidwick, Horton, The Lorax, and Yertle .
Celebrate the magical Dr. Seuss with your family! Go to the local library and take out some of his books to share as a family, watch a video of one of his books, have green eggs and ham for dinner, eat cat in the hat pancakes for breakfast or be together as a family and talk about all “the places you‘ll go”. Check out one of the resources below to boost your celebration:
